Wherever I am, I am safe.
When we carry an internal sense of safety we are able to bring that with us largely to most places that we go.
-Dr. Arielle Scwartz
I am devoted to finding ways to use art, movement, and discussion to help cultivate collective spaces for young children that allows them to learn in an authentically enriching way. I must admit that I want to cultivate belonging safe spaces for children because I deeply want to belong and feel safe. I want us to reclaim our birthright of safety, as Dr. Arielle Schwartz encourages.
Realizing this fact, I asked myself these questions.
What if we embody such an empowered awareness of our self that we feel safe wherever we are?
What if we develop an acute awareness of our bodies and the state of our nervous system?
What if we know how to identify the sensations that arise in our body when we feel a plethora of emotions both comfortable and uncomfortable?
What if we knew the things to do with our body when we feel unsafe and unconnected in order to bring us back to a feeling of safety?
This is what I strive to achieve for myself, and at the same time cultivate ways use art to achieve this goal for young people. So, I am creating an early education lessons for children ages 3-7. In the lessons, we use art, movement, and discussion to start the process of cultivating physical and emotional safety for them. In these lessons, young children will bring trauma informed mindful attention to themselves, their bodies, and their embodied emotions, explore their interspersonal relationships and lifestyle with the hope to cultivate a sense of belonging and safety.
We deserve to feel safe and so do our young learners.
Be well. Be whole. Belong.
